Principle of the method: The method involves diluting the oil with toluene and then adding heptane, which causes the asphaltenes to flocculate and the oil to separate into a distinct phase. The method is used to estimate the oil’s stability reserve. The stability reserve is assessed using a separation coefficient, with a low coefficient value indicating that the oil has an adequate stability reserve and that asphaltenes will not precipitate.
